It became quite obvious that the school's security was far from what was required to protect the students within the building. Columbine's insufficient security was blamed on the school's lack of information. The school seemed blind to the facts of violence in public high schools. Their school might have been a safer place had they known that over 3 million crimes occur on or near school campuses every year, 16,000 instances per school day, one instance every six seconds (Crime 1). Only within the past couple of years has school violence begun to see a decline. In 1999, however, seven percent of high schools students surveyed reported carrying a weapon on school grounds within the previous month of being questioned (School 1). A lost sense of security probably comes from the fact that twenty percent of high school students are afraid of becoming victims of school violence (Crime 2). With numbers that high, it is no wonder why students are having problems learning in public high schools. .
Before Columbine's incident, however, it was one of many public high schools in the country that felt there was nothing wrong with its school's security program. These schools feel a false sense of security because no incidents of major concern have taken place. By the time incidents occur and the school learns its lesson, however, it is too late for the school to respond to the situation, "It is a habit for people to react to a situation, instead of predicting that it will happen" (Leverence). What many schools also do not know about are the out-of-school conflicts that occur, many of which are often brought into the school. If schools know about these problems ahead of time, they most likely will stop them from happening on school grounds.
Although many schools may not have high tech video cameras and undercover faculty to help them get a better idea about inter-student conflicts, they do have hall monitors and police officers to help control the activities on school campuses.
