Winston keeps writing in his journal about the government and lack of privacy and freedom. The more he thinks about it the more he wants to overthrow the government and thinks if it is possible. The government spreads propaganda that they are good and life will be better,it is not. Freedom is gone, people are poor and there is no privacy. .
While walking in the hallway at work Winston receives a note from a beautiful woman that reads, I love you. They meet far away from the city and talk about how they hate their party and its strict rules. They have lots of sex together because she actually enjoys it and does not think it is dirty. They always meet in different places, but are worried they will be caught by the thought police. The difference between them is that Julia wants immediate freedom and that's all that she cares about and Winston wants long time freedom and to completely over throw the government.
Winston meets with O'brien, a high ranked official, that Winston believes is also against the party and a member of the brotherhood, an organization that is against the government. At their meeting they discuss nothing of the sort. .
Winston and Julia start to meet in a place above a shop regularly, making love and discussing the government. O'brien invites both of them to his house and there they do discuss the brotherhood where they join and promise to lie and cheat and do whatever it takes to overthrow the government.
Winston gets a black book from the brotherhood about over throwing the government and everything he needs, and reads some of it aloud to Julia and they both fall asleep. When they wake up they look outside to see a fat woman singing.
