My Name


My father, being the second born male, was named after his maternal grandfather whose name was Antonio Giuseppe Ongibene. The unfortunate thing is that my father never got to meet his grandfather because of an untimely accident with a donkey at the fairly young age of 45. He was kicked in the stomach by the donkey and suffered internal injuries which lead to his death a few days later (Grisanti, Anthony).
             Now we can skip forward a few generations to me. On that fateful day, November 3, 1983, I came into the world to bring my parents joy for many years to come. I was named .wait a second I had no name. It was not just a few hours that I did not have a name, it was four days. I was the "no name baby" for four days while my parents fought over the name that I did not have (Grisanti, Liviana). Now seeing that my father wanted to follow tradition and name me after his father because I was his first son. My father being the stubborn Sicilian that he is never talked about this tradition to my mother. He just told her that I needed to be named Joseph after his father because, "That's the way it is" (Grisanti, Liviana). My mother, wanting to have a say in the matter of naming her child, choose the names Christopher and Nicholas. Nonetheless, I was named neither of the three names previously discussed. On November 7, 1983, after a long stint of being the unnamed baby I was named by my mother Anthony Joseph Grisanti II after my father, who still was not content with his first child's name. The irony in this situation is that my mother named me after my father to keep my father happy, but he is still, to this day, offended by the fact that my mother broke Sicilian tradition (Grisanti, Anthony). I almost started a quarrel between the two of them while I was doing the interview.
             I am thankful that I was not named Joseph as the Sicilian tradition states because, to put it bluntly, I cannot stand the names that come along with Joseph; i.
