Nationalism In Action


Otto Von Bismark proved this by combining conservatism and nationalism into one system of government called Realpolitik. Inspired by his king and country, Bismark wanted to unify all the German states. In 1866 Germany fought the Austro-Prussian war in an effort to unify the northern states. In 1870 Otto Von Bismark engaged the southern states in the Franco-Prussian war, incorporating the south into the whole Germany. Germany became a united country in 1871 at Versailles, with Bismark as first chancellor and William 1 of Prussia as Emperor. Otto Von Bismark knew the power of having a common enemy. France also used this approach to unify their people.
             The lower classes were the last to benefit, but they benefited the most from German nationalism. Between the years of 1871 an 1941 an Industrial Revolution began, the beginning of the 20th century brought with it the development of new industry, transportation and energy; thus improving life for the masses. National labor unions were legalized and in 1884 Germany implemented accident insurance for all factory workers; in 1889 pension plans were introduced. Germany was at last a whole nation, united by the benefits of Nationalism.
             Modern Nationalism.
             On September 11th, 2001, two symbols of prosperity and democracy in the Untied States were destroyed, taking many innocent lives. The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., changed Americans and the way they live their lives forever. Immediately following the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, Americans began to once again display their nationalism. Flags hung everywhere, citizens proudly wore symbols of their country on their clothing; all to show remorse for the loss of life, and their support for President George W. Bush, his government and his policies. .
             America has always been a very nationalistic country. People from all over the world left their homeland in search of a better life, the "American Dream".
