My Career Goals

            My career goal is to further develop the national center that was created for American Indians and to increase the capacity and dimensions of the Center to include a department on aging and the issues that our elders face. The creation of a national disabilit center for Indian Country has been a long time goal of not only myself but of colleagues who work every day to improve conditions in Indian Country for our people with disabilities and elders. The national Center has been a dream or vision for many advocates in Indian Country and we want to obtain permanent funding that will maintain the Center beyond grant capacities. I would then like to get into policy and work in this field to help to develop and monitor policies that are created and presently in place that effect our people with disabilities and elders. Policies are often times developed by a few with a narrow view of a subject matter and I would like to be one of those people at the table raising concerns, issues and bringing ideas and solutions that would be more inclusive for our people in Indian Country. There is a lot of education that would need to begin and continue in this process in order to bring our peoples stories alive and give a view that would help to impact policy development. I have been amazed in the small amount of time that I have been exposed to policy development that often times it is a few people making decisions that affect a larger group of people.
             My expectations of the program are to learn more about the network in the aging community and to develop approaches that will increase services and programs that will assist our elders to live in their communities. I would appreciate any training as a leader because my experience has been my only teacher and I feel that I could be a more effective leader with some additional help. I believe that an opportunity to learn provides more tools for your life tool bag to prepare you for the next step or the next part of your life journey of helping our people.
