Moral Principles


            
             Absolutists like Kant believe that some moral principles cannot be overridden. Do you agree? If not, why not? If so, give an example of an absolute moral principle and explain why it should have no exceptions. What problems arise from a doctrine of absolute moral principles? Contrast Kant's view of absolutes with Aristotle's doctrine of the mean.
             I do not agree with the absolutist, that there are moral principles that cannot be overridden. I am more prone to agree with the relativist, however I my self am not. Under certain circumstances you must "adapt to,"" or "violate,"" your moral code. There are many different examples:.
             After many years of fighting with Iraq's regime the world is in complete turmoil. Iraq has unleashed biological weapons of mass destruction killing off two-thirds of the world. The lingering effects of the chemicals are killing more and more people everyday. The world must be repopulated by any means necessary.
             In this example many people will turn against what is morally "right,"" and "wrong."" Some cultures believe that by mixing their culture with someone not from their culture they are dishonoring their people. And in some places, people have even been executed for this. To keep the family name you might have to even commit incest. Incest in the American culture is looked down on horribly, but the only way to repopulate the U.S. is to sleep with your family members. In this case there is not an absolute moral principle because it has to be broken.
             An intruder has broken into your house late one evening. You hear shattering glass in the kitchen, you grab a bat and run downstairs. As you .
             enter the kitchen you slip and fall in some thing thick that soaks into your clothes. When you turn the lights on you realize it's your little girl's blood that has stained your clothes. She is lying there and her pants seemed to have been ripped off. It appears she has been raped.
