History

During the 17th and 18th century, numerous slaves were brought over to the Southern Colonies and improved the economy. The reason being for this consisted of many factors which included economic, geographic, and social.
During this time of the 17th and 18th centuries, the slave trade was very popular and was beginning to be brought to the America's. Slaves were also considered fairly cheap compared to other laborers. They were much less costly as to indentured servants and they were also much easier to control. These slaves could also perform the tasks needed to be done as well if not better than the indentured servants. Therefore slavery became a popular and profitable option which many plantation owners turned to.
The geographical landscape of the southern colonies consisted of acres and acres of flat fertile soil. This allowed the planting of cash crops such as tobacco and rice. However, with the number of indentured servants thinning, a new labor force was needed to tend to the crops. This is when slaves became the laborers that the plantation owners set their eyes on. Demand for slaves in the southern colonies flourished and soon after every plantation and farm consisted of numerous slaves. After a while, the colonies were actually dependant on the slaves.
Another major factor that led to slavery in the southern colonies was the social factors. With social pressure looming down on the governors and other political leaders in the colonies, nobody dared to place any duty or restriction on the slave trade. If governors or political leaders had set restrictions, people would have protested and resented the leaders. This is why slavery was mostly untouched by the law and taxes.
With all of these factors adding up, the drive toward the Southern Colonial slavery not only helped the economy, but also added various cultures to the Americas and also shaped the future of a young nation.
