When the ship had made it to the Cape of Good hope the crew spotted a group of Sperm Whale and busied themselves with harpooning the beasts and melting them down to whale oil. After they had caught they whales they came upon another whaling ship and the captain wasted no time in asking if they had seen Moby Dick. The other ship had no information about the whale but the captain warned him not to seek out such a beast for it has sunken many ships.

The Pequod, constantly looking for Moby Dick, had happened upon another ship and again captain Ahab wasted no time in asking about the beast but the other captain said that he had no news concerning the whale. Just as the Pequod had set sail another group of sperm whale surfaced and the two ships went after the school. After catching the whales the crew dragged it along side the ship so that they could start working on it. The crew quickly stripped off the blubber and fat before the sharks had a chance to get to it and then they melted the blubber into oil and stored it below deck in barrels.

As the Pequod once again set sail for the Indian Ocean the crews since of excitement was high. And soon they came upon another ship this time an English vessel and Ahab once again inquired about Moby Dick. The captain of the English vessel stuck out his right arm which consisted of whale bone from the elbow down. Upon seeing this Ahab quickly boarded the vessel to hear his story. Once again Ahab was warned not to follow after the beast Moby Dick but after a while the captain gave out the last sightings of the whale. And once again the Pequod took off after the whale. Soon after departing Queequeg became deathly ill and Ahab ordered the ships carpenter to make a canoe (like a coffin) according to the customs of Queequeg's people. Then they placed the canoe in his cabin and waited for him to die. But miraculously Queequeg recovered and decided to carve exotic designs in the canoe and use it as a chest.
