Julia Agrippina

As her power continued to increase, society changed its perspective on the role of women. Tacitus states that after the marriage "the whole country was transformed.".
After achieving her goal of marrying Claudius she almost immediately began to secure her son's position as the next emperor of Rome. To ensure this she organised for Nero to marry Octavia in 49 AD and to become the adopted son of Claudius the following year, she introduced him to the public eye by featuring him on certain coins from the eastern and Daniubian provinces with Britanucus, in 51 AD Nero assumed the "toga virillis" before usual age and took on the title "prince of youth." Levick argues "for Agrippina the premature advancement of Nero was an advertisement of her power", and finally financial donations and public games were made to the military and the public in Nero's name. .
Agrippina did not only promote her son, she also attempted to achieve power for herself.
"Agrippina used her influence over Claudius not only consolidate Nero's claims but to enhance her own position." - Bauman. .
Several factors assisted her in achieving this, firstly she was given her own Praetorian bodyguard, this was necessary because of all the enemies she made while climbing the social and political ladder. She was awarded the title "Augusta" in 50 AD, she was also awarded the title "AVGVSTA" this was the first time in Roman history a women was given such a title it meant "empress".
She also founded a colony of veterans where she was born and named it "Colonia Claudia Agrippinensis" Tacitus argues was to "advertise her power to the provincials." She was often seen in the Capitol in a carpentum which was a carriage usually reserved for priests and objects of worship. Tacitus felt all these elements "increased the relevance felt for a woman who to this day remains unique.
