But I wasn't too worried because my assumption was that the church would take care of me. Nevertheless, things didn't go as planned. All the church could do at that moment was, give me free bus passes and a route map. I felt the church let me down. .
Now that I'm older, I believe that was the best they could do at that time. I didn't get paid for moving four hours away from my mom, I didn't get a car, I didn't have a good job to work, I didn't even have a good quality instrument to play. Since I was living with this crazy aunt; none of my own means of transportation; no money, and no job, I had to get a job. I looked for a job for a week, and only accomplished completing an application. Nevertheless, one application was an automatic hire. .
I filled out this particular application to work at McDonald's, and I was hired on the spot. I was so glad I got this job because I was able to stay in Decatur. My aunt would get mad because the church didn't pay me, and I would eat her food without contributing. So when I got the job, she allowed me to stay in the basement of her house. It was so easy going to work because it was only a walking distance away. It was summertime, and I still didn't have any money. My crazy aunt was going mad again, and just when she was going to kick me out, my first check came in the next day. God was truly working in my favor that summer. That first check was the Doctoral degree mounted up on the wall of my office, the epitome of my manhood, the beginning of a good relationship with my aunt, it was the beginning of all my problems.
McDonald's was an easy place to work at until it became lunchtime. I loved meeting new colleagues, especially the pretty ladies I got the chance to work with everyday. With me being new on the job, I didn't know that come lunchtime I had better get on my job or go home. This was my first lunchtime swarm. The people gathered at McDonald's like buzzards around the carcass of a rotting buffalo.
