Medical Research On Animals

The first argument against animal testing is the extremely cruel and unnecessary procedures they have to experience. Just to point out how horrible the animals were being treated, in 1966, the United States passed the Animal Welfare Act. This forced scientists to provide adequate food and shelter for the laboratory animals ("Animal Experimentation" 2). Another way that animals are experiencing horrifying treatment is that they are being injected with various diseases. For example, many experiments are formed to replicate a disease carried by humans. Therefore, these tests consist of injecting a disease into the animal, letting it develop and form, and then trying to treat the condition with new experimental drugs and procedures. Cancer research is mostly done with mice and rats because they are much easier to replace (Catalano 30). Dogs are used many times to see and measure the effects of tobacco smoke in their lungs (Catalano 29). As previously mentioned, foxhounds are also used in research conducted on lungs. This experiment is done by removing 68 percent of their lungs, and then forcing the hounds on a treadmill which drives them to run against their will. The experiment is ended when the scientist feels that the animal is about to suffocate and results are then recorded. The animal is then removed and put to death. One D.V.M responded to the experiment, " "The only conclusion I can reach is that tremendous pain and suffering are being inflicted upon helpless dogs under the guise of research, and the results being attained are admittedly of no benefit to mankind." " ("Help Take a Bite Out of Cruel Experiments" 1). Another horrendous scene on animal testing includes: tens of thousands of horses suffer and die every year for the menopause drug Premarin" (PETA). Premarin is made from the byproduct of pregnant mares" urine. Every year mares are impregnated and then hooked up to rubber urine collection bags and catheterized.
