McCarthyism

It examined the whole loyalty and security program and dismissals were made if someone was thought to be disloyal. No one could remain honest if he had relationship with someone who has sympathized with the leftists. Having own and different thought from the average was punishable and communism was an absolutely guilty and ruined idea.
McCarthyism worked on two stages. The first stage was when an official agency like the FBI or the investigating committee indentified ostensible communists and during the investigation these people refused to cooperate. Because they were said to be disloyal to the nation they were no longer suitable for their jobs. In 1951 a so-called Responsibilities Program- began, which also helped this process. In this porgram some of liberal governors asked the FBI to provide information about state employees. Because these were mainly oral reports later it was easy to deny these inquiries. The whole program lasted for four years and the bureau could carry across 810 such reports (Ellen Schrecker).+++.
Show business was one of the most well known industries where blacklisting existed from the 1930s. Through Hollywood and the broadcast industry it was easy to attract publicity. After the dismissal of the Hollywood Ten, in 1950 just some days before the Korean War a composition was published with names of actors, writers, radio and television entertainers. Those people who were in this book could not find work until they cleared themselves. They were only able to clarify themselves when they gave other names instead of their own. The best known writers and actors had to publish articles in magazines and newspapers explaining how they could be part of the Communist system and what a big mistake they did. Writers and screenwriters had a chance to write and work under pseudonyms and from 1960 most of them could work again freely unlike actors who had to take whatever jobs they found.
