If the history of a sport can be traced at all, the exact details of the accounts can be quite unreliable. Many sports originated hundreds of years ago, or in some cases, in the times of the ancient world. One sport that can be traced to the exact starting date is the game of basketball. This sport is a baby compared to other games like running and gladiatorial combat. We are able to see how it has evolved from something great to something wonderful.
The game of basketball was invented by a physical education teacher by the name of Dr. James Naismith. The doctor did not have an epiphany about a sport that would some day become one of the most watched and played sports in the world, it was a last chance at settling down a rowdy class of students. Dr. Naismith worked at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. His job was to train future YMCA general secretaries.
During the fall Dr. Naismith had his students play football, and during the spring they played baseball. During the cold winter months in the snow covered land of New England, outside activity was simply impossible. The students were growing tired of the boring activities inside, and began to get unruly. At first, Dr. Naismith tried to play sports, such as lacrosse and soccer, inside. That turned out to be too dangerous. He then set out to invent a game that his students could play inside that was not to violent and did not need a lot of space.
By the winter of 1891 the game of basketball was invented. In the early years of the game, it was played with a soccer ball and a peach basket. The basket was attached to a balcony that was ten feet tall. The setting was ready for its first game.
Dr. Naismith envisioned a game that would allow anyone to play, no matter how strong they were or how many people there were. In his first class there were 18 students, so each team had nine members.
