Country Study: Jordan

Next, taking a look at the nationality of people living in Jordan, most of them consider themselves Jordanians, however they are split up into several different ethnic groups. The ethnic groups that are the most prevalent include Arabs at 98 percent, Circassian at one percent, and Armenian, also at one percent. Now, as a result of the population being 98 percent Arab, the official language in Jordan, obviously, is Arabic; however English is widely used and understood by the upper and middle class (People).
             In Jordan, there are three main religions. The religion which is practiced most, at 92 percent, is Sunni Muslim, with six percent being Christians (majority Greek Orthodox, but some Greek and Roman Catholics, Syrian Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, and Protestant denominations), and two percent other (several small Shi"a Muslim and Druze populations). Therefore, as a result of such a large majority practicing Sunni Muslim, there is not much religious diversity in Jordan (People).
             The government in Jordan plays a tremendous role in keeping the country stable. The government type is Constitutional Monarchy and the National Holiday is May 25th as a result of their Independence Day which occurred on May 25th, 1946. The executive branch has a Chief of State, who happens to be King ABDALLAH II and he has controlled this position since February 7th, 1999. There is also a Head of Government, whom is Prime Minister Ali Abul RAGHEB and he has held this position since June 19th, 2000. As far as elections for Chief of State and Head of Government go, there are none. Instead, those being placed in these positions is all done through hereditary means. Another large part of government in Jordan is the Legislative Branch which is known as the bicameral National Assembly or Majlis al "Umma and consists of the Senate, also called the House of Notables (Majlis al-Aayan) (40 seats; members appointed by the monarch from designated categories of public figures; members serve 4 year terms.
