4. The climate is still hot and wet but the land surrounding the coast is flat making it easier to farm and it has a good water supply. The rich soils around Sao Paulo are ideal for growing coffee. .
             Brasilia was chosen in 1960 as the site for the new federal capital as previously Salvador and Rio de Janeiro were the two capital cities. The area was virtually uninhabited and now the man-made city has a population of over 1.5 million. The purpose of this project was to spread the distribution of the population more evenly in an attempt by the government to develop the centre of the country. It has a dense population of over 100 people per square kilometre. It was manufactured and planned to meet the requirements and specification to cater for the population. .
             In the north of Brazil, in the Amazonian basin, because of the physical factors, this area is underdeveloped, with few jobs, trade and industry. There is a lack of basic services or health, education and electricity. This also means birth and death rates are very high. There is poor quality of life and the life expectancy is low. This area has these push factors and few pull factors that make the location desirable to inhabit. Manaus has higher population as it is a port that provides industry and enables trade of resources. This provides some employment in the region, shown on the population density choropleth map, figure 1.4. mouth of the river as it opens into the Atlantic ocean , the population density increases to 0.5 to 5 people per square kilometre. There is industry here from the large ports that import and export goods all around the world. In the centre and to the west of Brazil the land is mainly used for traditional farming methods, except for the mountainous highland areas. It is very sparsely populated as inaccessibility makes trade and transporting farmed good hard. Over 90 percent of Brazilians live near the coast in the south and east of the country.
