Life Of A Slave

The Americans gave no regard to keeping the slave families together and would often split up families to prevent any kind of revolt. When the owners purchased their slaves, the slaves would be forced to work for the entirety of the owner's life. Plantations in the south were usually much larger than plantations in the north and many southern plantation owners would own an average of twenty slaves (www.spartacus). .
Slaves sold to northern plantation owners had a different lifestyle than slaves sold to southern plantation owners. Plantations in the north had far less harvesting then those of the south; meaning that less slaves were needed. All harvesting that was done was usually supervised by the owner working in the fields with the slave. The owner as well as slave could gain some kind of respect for each other working side by side. Slaves often worked in the house as much as they did in the fields. The owner had to gain trust in the slave to let them into the house with their loved ones. Some owners even gave their slaves a little taste of freedom. They would allow a slave, usually one whom he trusted the most, to go do errands for them in the city. .
Northern plantation owners educated their slaves so they could communicate in the house and ultimately get more work done. They would usually teach them the English language and sometimes a more extensive education. Once northerners started to educate their slaves, people realized that they were not cannibals. They were actual human beings capable of all that the colonials were capable of. Southern plantation owners would not want to educate their slaves because of the amount of slaves they had. If they were smart enough to learn another language than certainly they are smart enough to organize a revolt. Though revolts were not frequent, some did occur. The Stono Rebellion, of South Carolina, occurred in the 1730's. Slaves attacked plantation owners but it was very short-lived.
