.
What effects does this have on pastors? The responsibilities of pastors are more extensive than most people realize. For one thing, pastors can become severely stressed, thus becoming emotionally and physically exhausted with people constantly craving their attention. A study of 341 clergy from 36 denominations and 43 states revealed that unrealistic expectations were a key factor in burnout (Malony and Hunt, "The Psychology of Clergy"). Because pastors are considered "helping professions," they are the last to seek help from counselors or friends, however, 70% of pastors feel they do not have someone they consider a close friend because of the time and effort it takes (Pastor 1). As a result, this can lead to poor preaching, moral breakdown, spiritual insolvency, and lack of interest and communication within the church and community, as well as their family (Willmore 1). .
Clergy spouses generally have a strong commitment to the church and try to fulfill high expectations and standards, while trying to maintain a separate identity. The identity of the spouse is often directly connected to the pastor. Spouses of pastors are usually trusted and respected because of their direct relationship to the pastors. In Marilyn Brown Oden's article, "Stress and Purpose: Clergy Spouses Today," she states, "When I was recently called for jury duty, the attorney, after asking my husband's occupation, repeatedly prefaced his interrogation by saying, "As a minister's wife, I assume you- These assumptions and images affect all of our relationships to some degree, at least initially, and can be a continuing obstacle to attaining close relationships (4). Pastors" spouses essentially struggle on developing a separate identity, personally and professionally, in their desire to avoid being stereotyped as an expansion of the spouse's ministerial role. .
The responsibilities to the pastors" spouse are also more extensive then most people realize.
