When We Were Kings

The use of juxta positioning of the violence and chaos of Zaire and the Ku Klux Klan by the youthful poetics of Ali and the soulful jazz of black musicians is very important in the portrayal of the issue identity and Gast's attempts to position the viewer. By juxta posing these four events Gast is suggesting that the inclusion of Muhammad Ali and black jazz music will bring about a stop to the persecution of the Zairians and the African-Americans. However probably most importantly this juxta positioning puts the black African Americans and the black Africans together in the fact they have both been oppressed and persecuted. However from this juxta positioning it is seen as if Muhammad Ali and the music will not only unify them but also save them from common oppressors. The drum holds huge symbolism throughout the whole feature documentary. Gast has successfully used the drum as a symbolic link between the identity of the black African-Americans and the black Africans. This has been done by including statements such as "the drum has been our link" and juxta positioning the drums of the African people and the drums of the new African-American jazz music. This symbolism of a link shows that the jazz music and the beat is derived directly from the drum beat of the African people, this link in music shows that there is also a link in the people and that Africa is the home and identity of the black Africa-American. The viewers" attitudes upon the issue of Identity are formed or further reinforced by the prior viewing of the films Ali and Remember the Titans. These films are both based upon black African-American men and the way they deal with persecution in the 60's and 70's. These films hold relevance because in the movie Ali it shows the life of Ali and also the hardships he has to endure by the persecutors who claim he has no identity or culture. Similar in Remember the Titans the main character Coach Boone is also incredibly persecuted against.
