Justice And Civil Liberties

Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr. were both very strong believers in equality and civil liberties. Susan B. Anthony fought for women's equality and right to vote and Martin Luther King fought for the equality between blacks and whites, they were both fighting for a cause that we still fight for today.
In 1873, Susan B. Anthony wrote a speech entitled "Women's Right to Vote" in response to being arrested in the election of 1872 for attempting to register for voting. She states that the primary issue is should women have the legal right to vote. She concludes that according to The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution women, just like white men and black men should have the lawful right to vote. One reason given by Susan B. Anthony for her argument that women should have the right to vote is stated to be " how can the "consent of the governed" be given, if the right to vote is denied? The women dissatisfied as they are with this form of government, that enforces taxation without representation, that compels them to obey laws to which they have never given their consent, that imprisons or hangs them without a trial by a jury of their peers, and that robs them of the custody of their own persons, wages, and children." Susan B. Anthony says that why should women obey a government that is so cruel and unruly to women when women have no say in how this government was chosen. The evidence Susan Anthony uses to support her reason comes from the Declaration of Independence, which states "All men are created equal, and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights To secure these, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." Which means that people, not only men, but all those living under a government are the ones who give the government its power. If this government does not give and protect these "inalienable rights" to all the people that it governs, then the government has no power.
