Jasmine's Assimilation

The fact that in times of trouble she runs to an Indian family, shows that that is where she still feels comfortable, and taken care of. In fact, Jasmine did have other options rather than living with Professorji, yet she remained with him and his family for a substantial amount of time. Perhaps it is because Professorji is a reminder of Prakash and the good life she had in India, but Jasmine does feel some sense of comfort in the very Indian apartment. It is only until a chain of unfortunate accidents (the parents getting hurt, seeing that Professorji was really not successful, etc.) did Jasmine choose to explore her other options.
At this point, Jasmine calls Lillian's daughter, Kate, in hopes of discovering the real American way of life. Kate manages to get Jasmine a job as being a caregiver for a family (Taylor, his wife Wylie, and their daughter Duff), in a much nicer, much more American, part of town. It is at this point, that Jasmine is the most American she will ever be. Jasmine's job with the family is to be the caregiver for the young daughter, Duff. She has trouble adjusting to this American family and leaving her Indian customs at bay. For example, it is hard for Jasmine to accept the fact that she is to sleep in a different room; that's simply not how it is done in India. It is with this family that Jasmine is most American, but at the same time, still part of her old culture. She is finally able to succumb to her "womanly duties" as a caregiver and have the daughter that she's always wanted, and always been expected to have. While this life is a reflection of her culture (in the sense that it is her duty to care), at a mere glimpse of the reality that she thought she escaped (Sukhwinder) she is reminded of who she was and still is; consequently, she flees again to try and start a new, American, life.
Jasmine doesn't simply move to another city though, she moves to an entirely new state, Iowa, in hopes of truly starting a new life, and hopefully at this point, assimilating into the American culture.
