Another event that helped contribute to the escalation of the Arab-Israeli conflict was the June War. In May 1967, the Soviets and Syrian intelligence had reports that pointed towards an Israeli operation towards Syria for sponsoring Palestinian guerilla activities against Israel. Because of these reports, Nasser deployed troops to the Sinai Peninsula. Nasser was believed to be bluffing. He was not in position to attack Israel with much of his army stationed in Yemen. However, the Israeli were threatened and more important they could not tolerate the buildup of Arab allegiance around Nasser. On June 5, 1967, the Israeli Air Force attacked the Egyptian air bases and destroyed the Egyptian Air Force. Israeli pilots later destroyed the Syrian air forces as well as the Jordanian air forces. In the wake of the June War, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict became even more heated. By Israel emerging victorious in their battle with Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, and capturing additional territories including East Jerusalem, from the Palestinian viewpoint, things had gotten much worse. In reflecting upon the June War, I felt that Israel had no choice but to defend themselves against the surprise attacks from the Arab world. I believe that to this day, Egypt and the rest of the Arab world believed they were defending the Palestinian cause and were trying to capture lost land and Arab honor. .
Another aspect of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that was reflected upon was the Oslo Peace Accords. I felt that this was the biggest step the leaders of these two nations took in trying to mend the wounds that were inflicted with the constant struggles between Israel and Palestine. Through trying to make peace, both Israel and Palestine were attempting to put aside the great differences that led to the constant conflicts between the two nations.
