Canadian HIstory

The conquers had brought a tremendous amount of changes and reforms with them. .
The most significant changes were made in the political life of the colony. The negative impact on the French speaking population was brought by the royal proclamation of 1763. Proclamation significantly reduced the Quebec's territory and restricted all Roman Catholics from offices. Due to changes in the diplomacy toward Native people the conflict with Amerindians has began. During this conflict British carried a significant loses which consisted of some French settlers as well. A colony's legal system was changed to British standards as part of an assimilation program and attempts to try to transform the colony to British standards. Under the new system the militia captains were dismissed and the Protestant justices were appointed who could confiscate home and land for minor debts and jail people. The French speaking population was getting concerned as with these changes because they favored English population. For instance only English speaking jurors were admitted to trials. However French civil law still remained in the colony which contributed to a large legal disorder. In 1774 the English Parliament passed the Quebec Act. This was the first important milestone in the constitutional history of British Canada. Under its terms the boundaries of Quebec were extended as far as the Ohio River valley. The Roman Catholic Church was recognized by the Quebec Act, and its right to collect tithes was confirmed. Also of enduring importance was the establishment of the French civil law to govern the relations of Canadian subjects in their business and other day-to-day relations with each other. British criminal law was imposed in all matters having to do with public law and order and offenses for which the punishment might be fine, imprisonment, or in some cases death. The trial by jury was first introduced but the hearings were conducted in English language for the French speaking accused.
