Another argument is that the movie industry has become very generous with the ratings they have been giving out over the last ten years. Nowadays it seems that a movie today with a "PG13" rating would have had an "R" rating 10 years ago. Observers say that this proves how unfair the current system is, but I tend to think that the MPAA, which implements the ratings system, is just adapting to the times. Many of today's movies that garner a PG-13 rating, and they get that rating because while they show some nudity or violence, it is not as much as those which garner the R rating.
The first reason I believe the current movie rating system is fair is that is it limits the amount of cursing or violence that are in a movie, which is good if you are a parent. When my daughters tell me about a movie they wish for me to take them to see, I look to see if there is any cursing or violence within it. This is where the ratings system comes in handy to me. For my kids, most of their movies fall under the G or PG rating. Rated "G" movies are suitable for everyone. Hardly any violence will be in the film, and there is not offensive language. Most G rated movies are animation or children's films such as Beauty and the Beast. The "PG" rating is used for movies that do not have cursing or violence and are suitable for children accompanied by a parent. These are the movies such as The Lizzie McGuire Movie and Big Fat Liar. I want to have my kids enjoy the movie without the cursing or violence the other ratings warrant. When my kids get older and I feel they are ready, then they will go to see those films. The ratings system to me is fair as the ratings help me avoid those films I don't want them to see.
Another reason that the current ratings system is fair is that it helps a parent of those kids over the age of thirteen to decide which movie will be suitable for them. The rating for these types of movies is known as PG-13.
