             Growing from the "Roaring Twenties," the Harlem Renaissance became an event just as important as the twenties. Events of the "Roaring Twenties" like an increase in wealth and education and Prohibition had a direct impact on the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a movement of black artist .

             and writers that began right after World War I, flourished through the twenties, and went away at the dawn of the Great Depression. Consisting of mostly literally works, the Harlem Renaissance also produced a new black music called jazz. This music called jazz was an important part of the renaissance producing icons like Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. The renaissance was also sometimes called the Jazz Age because of the connection between the music and the movement. The development of jazz came from the effects of the "Roaring Twenties" (Watson 107).
             Being a part of the actual Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes was also greatly affected by the movement. Hughes appreciated his colleagues" works but he was mostly fascinated by the music of the Harlem Renaissance. Jazz and blues music had a tremendous effect on all of Hughes" poems. Using common jazz rhythms, Hughes would write poems in a jazz style about the life of jazz. In his poem "Jazzonia", Hughes uses jazz rhythms to tell his story:.

             Oh, shinning rivers of the soul.
