Industrial Hemp


There is no way anyone can make the argument that hemp wouldn't be a valuable addition to the nation's economy.
             Industrial hemp is a very prolific plant. "Industrial hemp can yield 3 to 8 dry tons of fiber per acre, this is four times what an average forest can yield" (Bielby n.p.). Hemp is also a very low maintenance crop. "Close to 50 percent of all the worlds pesticides are sprayed on cotton which is contaminating our drinking water. Hemp also grows well in a large variety of climates and requires half as much pesticides as most commercial crops"(Bielby). Hemp has all the production possibilities of cotton, but with a lower maintenance and cost.
             For a long time hemp was thought of as a viable resource. "Hemp has not always been thought of as a nuisance, or a crop that has been of no value to society"(Industrial n.p.). In 1637 in Hartford Connecticut a mandatory law was passed that each family plant at least one teaspoon full of hemp seed"(Hemp n.p.). Some colonies even found it so "valuable they passed legal tender laws so that hemp could be used to pay taxes"(Hemp). What kind of crop throughout U.S. history has had such a reputation that it has been used for legal tender? Before the prohibition of cannabis, even car companies had high hopes for this crop. .
             Henry Ford dreamed that someday automobiles would be grown from the soil. In 1941 the Ford Motor Company produced an experimental automobile with a plastic body composed of 70% cellulose fibers from hemp. The car was as durable as the steel used at the time and it was designed to work on hemp fuel, but because of the ban on both alcohol and hemp the car was never produced (Industrial). .
             hemp could be used to help replace the use of gasoline. .
             According to the Department of Energy and Dr. Brooks Kellie, hemp as a biomass fuel producer requires the least specialized growing and processing procedures of all the hemp products. The hydrocarbons in hemp can be processed in to a wide range of biomass energy sources, from fuel pellets to liquid fuels and gas.
