Natives fought for interests that they didn't know; besides the colonizers' power ambition was transmitted to natives, who saw how their families and their pueblos disappear, because of the thirst of power.
Furthermore natives couldn't refuse to fight because they were under the Europeans laws and those who refused to fight were decapitated. Moving into the movie, when Nathaniel and his brother told the British officer that the hurons were attacking villages and that they have to abandon the fort to go to their village to protect their families, the officer accused and detained them, because he thought that the natives didn't want to defend the British sovereignty. For colonizers the only important thing was to conquer more lands to be more powerful, the natives feelings and priorities were trampled.
