Immigration: The World Of Many Colors

Both were encouraged by globalization to emigrate from their native countries, but each fosters globalization in a unique way. I have changed the names of those interviewed to protect their anonymity. .
The first person I interviewed was a young man from Colombia, whom I will call Carlos. Carlos emigrated from Colombia to the United States three years ago. He was 22 years old and had just completed graduate school in Bogotá, Colombia, with a degree in physics and electrical engineering. He was recruited by Ferme National Acceleration Laboratory as a laboratory technician in Chicago, Illinois. During his residence in Chicago, he worked for the laboratory, made money, and learned most of the English he knows today. The laboratory provided him with proper housing and a small salary, on which he lived. Later, Carlos decided that he wanted to attend graduate school in California. He was relocated with the support of the laboratory to Davis. In Davis it was arranged that he would work as an assistant in the physics laboratory located on the UCD campus while earning his PhD in Physics. .
My second interview was with a young woman, whom I will call Mai Ling. Mai Ling immigrated during her freshman year in high school to the United States from Taiwan. Currently, Mai Ling is an eighteen year old freshman at UC Davis. Her parents were the driving force behind her emigration from Taiwan. They felt that she would be able to obtain a much more valuable and prestigious education in the United States. They also felt that by earning this "better- education, Mai Ling would be eligible for more higher-paying jobs than she would with a Taiwanese education. Her parents were correct. A study done in 1998 by Kevin McCarthy found that immigrants from Taiwan who are educated in the United States made significantly more money [in the United States] than those not educated in the United States (McCarthy, 15).
