Imigration

Unfortunately, after a while we tended to forget the Russian culture, mainly the language and the traditions. On the other hand, my aunt's family, the recent immigrants to America, is no longer desires to melt in with everybody else. They do want to learn the language, but they do not want to forget their mother language. They would love to get to know the American traditions, but at the same time to keep their individual culture. Many people describe it as "salad bowl". It really does make sense. One could say that the English man could be symbolized as lettuce, Africans as black olives, Germans as radishes, Italians as tomatoes and so on and so forth making a giant salad. All different kinds of fruits and vegetables tossed together in a bowl to create one dish. Everything is in close quarters of each other, but still is separate and individual. All immigrants resident in America, most of them speak English in public, but at home they speak their own language and practice their own cultural traditions.
Independently of the origin, all immigrants in order to succeed in America have to assimilate. It is very difficult to get a job or to operate a business without knowing American language and traditions. Without knowing the language the immigrants will not even pass the first job interview, or in case of business they will not be able to communicate with their customers, which will cause the drop in business. Language is the key issue for assimilating, and self-interest impels most foreign-born to learn American language quickly. Although when the immigrants come here hardly speaking any English, most recognize that learning English is the key to their economic success. A study of Southeastern Asian refugees in Houston found that fluent speakers earned almost three time as much money as those who only spoke a few words. If the immigrants are not aware of the Christmas tradition of exchanging gifts, they could end up in very uncomfortable situation during an office Christmas party.
