After reading Adrienne rich it made me think of a friend I had in high school who use, and probably still uses, lying as a way to cover up or fix her current problematic situations. Rich's idea that liar's use lies to make life simpler describes her perfectly. Her thoughts on habitual lying also represent her very well. Though her lies got her nowhere and fooled no one; she has lived a simpler life dodging the truth. However, she lives a life of unimportance. She has no plans and is not even pursing a high school education. She is content with skipping from job to job. She has lived a life under false pretenses, and it is now catching up with her. Lying has become her way of life, and she no longer can recognize the truth. The more she lies, the more she tends to believe herself. She has taken on the habit of convincing herself before she lies to others. Now I do not know when she is telling the truth. I lost total confidence in her words. .
In part I think her growing up had a lot to do with her lying. When she was younger her mom and dad split up and her mom got a new boyfriend. He would always play and touch her older sister and never touch her. Even though at the time she did not know that is was wrong for him to touch either one of them, she wanted to be pretty so she could get the attention also. "We have been expected to lie with our bodies: to bleach, redden, unkink or curl our hair, pluck our eyebrows, shave armpits, wear padding in various places or lace ourselves, take little steps, glaze finger and toe nails, wear clothes that emphasized our helplessness."-Adrienne Rich. This quote describes her very well especially the last word "helplessness". She began to buy padded bras, she dyed her hair numerous of times, and she even changed the way she walked. She was a helpless sole and she needed some one there to tell her what was right. Unfortunately she did not have any one when her mother found out she was forced to lie and say nothing ever happened.
