Henry Ford

Another impressive accomplishment of Ford's happened when he purchased the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railway. During the early 1900's, the railroads were in poor working condition. They were being run by accountants, which created a terrible situation. The railroad that Ford bought was one that covered areas that related to the car industry. Because of all the bureaucracy, before Ford bought the railroad, the front office paid nearly $18,000 per month to the legal department. After Ford's purchase, that decreased to $200 per month on average. .
Ford believed that all waste should be eradicated. He did a great many things to ensure this happened. He hired people to do time studies. He felt that every foot of space on the floor of a building needed to be used to its fullest capacity. He made sure workers were not moving more than they needed to when the needed a tool, or a part for their particular operation on the car. He made sure the unnecessary movements were minimized, and a standard operating procedure was created and followed. He broke all of the factory jobs down in categories that created work for blind, maimed, and slow individuals. He saw no reason why a person with one leg could not support himself by working. .
Henry also took on the task of building tractors to help England when it looked like the war would take away from the time the residents had to farm. He sent them in pieces to be assembled up arrival. .
There are certain things that Henry Ford did that seem to contradict some of his beliefs. In one breath, he will say that the customer is always right, and that he builds the cars to suit them. In the next breath, "any customer can have a car painted any color he wants, so long as it is black." This may sound short-sighted, but think of the logic behind it. Henry Ford created a car that a great deal of the country could afford. He made all the parts the same so anyone could find a part to repair it if necessary.
