Eye For An Eye, Tooth For A Tooth

Over the past decade there has been much controversy over the standard reprimand for murder, capital punishment, in the state of Texas. Many residents feel the punishment should be equal to the crime; others however, feel that you can not stop killers from killing by killing. When surveyed, 61% of Texas residents supported the death penalty while 14% were not sure, leaving a mere 25% opposing (TCADP).
Capital punishment was declared "cruel and unusual punishment" by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 29, 1972. There were 45 men on death row in Texas and 7 in county jails with a death sentence. All of the sentences were commuted to life sentences by the Governor of Texas, and death row was clear by March 1973 (TDCJ). In 1973, revision to the Texas Penal Code once again allowed assessment of the death penalty and allowed for executions to resume effective January 1, 1974 (TDJC). Between 1819 and 1923, hanging was the standard execution method; in 1923, death by electrocution was adopted in the state of Texas (TDJC). In 1977, Texas adopted lethal injection as means of execution (TDJC).
Texas residents are divided into two major groups on this issue; there are those who concur with the old saying, an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. The punishment should be equal to the crime committed. Others identify with the view that it's in-effective to attempt to stop murderers by sentencing them to death. Death could only lead to more death.
Authorities have made large advances in criminal investigation with new technologies. Truthfully, there is always room for error; there will always be the question, what if What if the innocent was found guilty of a crime they did not commit? Great effort has been made in pretrial, trial, appeals, writ and clemency procedures to minimize the chance of an innocent being convicted, sentenced to death or executed (Pro-Death).
By executing murderers you prevent them from murdering again and do, thereby, save innocent life (Pro-Death).
