The goal in my life is to attain a career that I love doing daily.
profession, to me, would most definitely have to be a veterinarian. .
Veterinary medicine began several hundred years ago. It was practiced by men .
with no degree. They practiced their profession with no anesthesia, no .
antibiotics, limited income, minimal equipment, and minimal knowledge. .
Today, it's a different situation; the potential is unlimited.
The profession of veterinary medicine began in the early 1800's when .
people's horses and other animals (pigs, oxen, cattle, goats, dogs) became .
ill or injured. These early animal doctors had little references to go by, .
they assumed that the animal and the human organs were in the same locations .
and in the same proportions. The veterinarians back then used very crude .
tools and often times the animal would get an infection because the utensils .
were not sterilized. Also, under operation the patients were given primitive .
anesthesia that rarely eased the pain. There were no antibiotics in the .
early days to fight infections so many of the "treated" animals became sick .
and died after the operations. As the time went on, more and more .
veterinarians were needed, thus new technology was invented to keep up with .
the rising animal population.
Now days, animal care has become very complex. Instead of one .
veterinarian that does everything there are different vets for just about .
every purpose. They play a huge role in the healthcare of pets, livestock, .
zoo animals, and laboratory animals. Their time commitments vary because .
small animal vets have their clients bring in the animals whereas large .
animal vets have to make house calls and don't see as many patients a day.
The two main types of veterinarians are the ones that treat large animals .
and the ones that treat small animals. More than half of all veterinarians .
major in small animals. Small animal vets usually take care of dogs, cats, .
