Gun Control

These groups are "necessary to the security of a free state," and "have the right to bear arms." The police force and National Guard have taken the place of the militia, and there is no longer a need for anyone else to have guns.
In the US there are approximately two hundred million privately owned guns for a population of just over 275 million. This is statistically close to a gun per person, and places more than one gun per household on average. Since there are many people who do not own guns, it means that the people who do, could have many more than just one. If someone has more than one gun, they would be more likely to sell one (or more of them) to minors, or criminals (without being able to run a background check on the potential buyer). There is also the possibility that they would be stockpiling them for future use. In other words, guns are everywhere, they affect everyone's life, and it is usually in a harmful way. .
The most recent gun related tragedy could have also been avoided (or stopped sooner) if there were stricter gun control laws. John Muhammad was able to purchase the Bushmaster XM-15 rifle used for the sniper attacks, even though he was legally barred from owning firearms as part of a restraining order issued more than two years ago. Even after realizing what gun the sniper was using detectives were not able to do much because of how lenient the gun laws are. The store where Muhammad bought his gun did not keep computerized records (and did not legally have to), and as such detectives could not find the killer by just searching for owners of that particular gun. Gun control briefly jumped back into the spotlight after the sniper incident, but no major moves were made towards banning the sale of guns.
There are several major anti-gun control groups. These groups include the National Rifle Association (NRA), and the Gun Owners of America (GOA). The NRA is a national group "dedicated to the upholding of the Second Amendment of the Constitution.
