Incivility

Incivility in business has become a very well known arena for many consumers as well as employees over the last several years. A survey completed in 2002 by Public Agenda (Fig 2) shows that over three-fourths of the people asked said "It is all to common for me to see sales people acting like the customer is not even there" (qtd. in Aggravating Circumstances 16). The same figure also shows that three-fourths of the people asked have seen the customer do the same to the sales clerk; both sides are now guilty of incivility. Now when the sales clerk goes to buy something or request the services of a company it starts all over again creating a vicious circle of rude unsatisfied people. This causes the business to sell less of their product, which forces them to lower prices, and possibly go out of business. For a company that does not deal with the consumer directly there is the problem of peer-to-peer impoliteness. Eavesdropping, making public accusations, and even taking other peoples food out of the refrigerator are all forms of incivility that employees have to deal with on a day-to-day basis (Jacoby 1-2). These types of distractions can cause a drop off in work performance, and work production. In a study conducted by University of North Carolina 46% of people asked said they had contemplated changing their job due to rudeness in the work place, 12% reported that they actually did leave their jobs because of the incident. (Fig. 3) Imagine this going on in all of the business across the nation at the same time. Our entire economy would be at risk because people do not know how to be civil to each other.
How many times have you been driving in your car when someone cut you off with out any sign of remorse, or tried to merge onto the highway and no one would let you in? With the increasing population in most areas, it is safe to say that most of us have at least seen this happen to someone while driving.
