GROSSE POINTE BLANK: FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW.
The movie Grosse Pointe Blank should without a doubt be shown in the movie festival. This movie is extremely deep and can be interpreted in many different ways. Through all the gruesome violence, this film has a deeper meaning. In this movie I believe violence is perceived as being meaningless in comparison to life's problems; In addition, it also provides comic relief to the romance story that takes place. Martin's profession is one that allows the writer to really express Martin's emptiness in life. The violence is used to base the story of life and love off of. The filmmakers do a good job of going to that extreme, allowing the viewer to see that it is far from realistic. A good example of this is during the gunfight scene at the supermarket. Felix walks in and the clerk is playing his video game that has a striking resemblance to the gunfight taking place at the time. This gives the viewer a sense of falseness regarding the violence. Overall, I think this movie demonstrates the importance of being part of a community and being able to communicate with people. Martin discovers a "new found respect for life." The viewer sees this through Martin's becoming tired of keeping his life a secret, the fact that he cannot be taken seriously, and furthermore the emptiness he incurs during his life. .
Everywhere Martin Q. Blank goes he must lie and cover up for a ten-year period of his life. As a result Martin has been limited of what he can do because of his irregular and highly illegal profession, a professional killer. For example in the opening scene Martin is talking to his secretary and she is informing him about his high school reunion and trying to persuade him to go, but, Martin can only respond by saying, "Dont tease me. You know what I do for a living." Here the viewer gets a sense of Martin's missing out on activities because of the career he has chosen.
