Give Them A Break

" (Mortazavi 2000) The United States is also far behind the Czech Republic "which gives parents 28 weeks of paid leave." (Mortazavi 2000) The United States policy is a guaranteed 12 weeks, without pay, which was brought about in 1993 with the Family Leave Act. (RAND1995) We need to take the cue from these other countries and realize that this is an important issue and it deserves a great deal of thought. Although there was action taken in 1993, we have more and more mothers (new and old) who are working so this is an important area of interest. Many women have to return to work soon after they give birth, many times it is too soon, and this is dangerous to their health. This is why there should be a set amount of time so that all women have equal chances at full recovery and still earn money. The idea of considering the women's health ties in with Stone's idea of interests. .
Stone describes the concept of interest as being like the old proverb, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." (Stone 210) By this, Stone means that if you do not speak up how will anyone know that there is a problem. When dealing with the concept of interest, you must take in to consideration the fact that many people are not aware of the policies that exist today. Although we could say that since they have no knowledge that there is a problem, then there is no problem, the moral high road must be taken. We must consider the welfare of these new mothers and their newborns. An area of special interest should be paid time off because of the new expenses a baby brings. If there were a set percentage of pay that women were to receive, this would be of great benefit to them. Although this does pose a problem for some women who already benefit from a greater percentage through their companies established maternity leave policy. This would have to be dealt with by the specific companies on an individual basis.
