             In other parts of the country, people felt helpless and almost guilty because they weren't in areas directly affected by the attacks. However, they still felt a need to remember those who lost their lives in some way. My hometown newspaper, The San José Mercury News, tells the story of Pat Kintzley, an employee at Oak Hill cemetery in San José, California. Kintzley felt a need to create some sort of memorial in honor of the victims of September 11th. Though almost 5,000 miles away from New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C., Kintzley became " so angry that he climbed a 110-foot redwood tree at the edge of the historic cemetery to install an illuminated U.S. flag - on the day of the attacks. Now, one year later, he constructed a permanent memorial in the cemetery where Jason Dahl, captain of Flight 93, is buried. The memorial is " a concrete monument -- consisting of a 45-foot-wide pentagon, the image of an airliner, flagpoles, lights and landscaping -- [to] be dedicated to the victims of Sept.11."" The monument is a permanent fixture that is visible from the air by planes flying into nearby San José International Airport. This is just one of the many memorials around the country that pays respect and invokes remembrance for all who lost their lives that day. .
             The events of September 11th, 2001, not only shook the nation, but also disrupted a vast majority of the entire world. Many citizens of the USA believe that they were the only ones affected by this tragedy. However, people across the globe shed tears along with us and join us in fighting terrorism. It is selfish to believe that something of this magnitude would be rendered as unimportant to the rest of the world. We are all human and live on the same planet; we all share in aspirations of living in a peaceful and non-violent society.
