Geoffroy Tory

Geoffroy Tory (1480-1533) was a true renaissance man; he was a professor, scholar, translator, poet, author, publisher, printer, bookseller, calligrapher, designer, illustrator, and engraver. Tory began his studies at the universities in Rome and Bologna. When he returned to France in 1505, Tory became a lecturer of philosophy at the University of Paris. He also worked as a reader at Henri Estienne's printing office and as a scribe and illuminator during this time. .
Sometime after his second trip to France in 1518, he opened a bookstore on the Petit Pont at the sign of the Pot Cassse. It was during this time that he designed several series of initials, one of which was Roman capital initials set into black squares that seem to come alive with meticulous floral designs and crible. In 1529, Tory published Champ Fleury (subtitled The art and science of the proper and true proportions of the attic letters, which are otherwise called antique letters, and in common speech roman letters.) .
Geoffroy Tory's work greatly influenced Robert Estienne, Claude Garamond, Simon de Colines and numerous others in their work. In turn, various others who came before him influenced Tory.
