Fukuzawa Yukichi

He admired the successful civilization in the West which has a spirit of independence and academic freedom. He believed that the sprite could eventually make Japan equal to other civilized nations. Fukuzawa found there was a lack of independent spirit in Japanese political system: people just follow government's decisions; there was no opportunity of expressing their devotion, and the entire country was in a state of drift. As a result, there is no progress, only digression. People were just satisfied the way they lived and not wanted to improve and become equal to the West. Fukuzawa urged middle class people in Japan to nurture a civilization because they have knowledge and intellect. He used examples from Europe to show some middle classes did there such as the lays of polictial economy and changed the way of commerce by Adam smith. On the other hand, the government just had to play the role of protecting the civilization to make it meaningful and successful.[2] The second argument that shows Fukuzawa was Eurocentric is that he saw China and Korea in the same way as European did. In his view, China and Korea are old societies and without law enforcement. Also, they do not know how to progress either personally or as a nation because they do not want to follow Western civilization. Fukuzawa was worried that westerners may consider Japan was similar to China and Korea because they are located closely in east Asia.[2] Therefore, he suggested that Japan should move on by itself move to civilized nation of the West and leave others alone because China and Korea were still following the old way. On the other hand, in his interpretation of education, he tried to be guided by the laws of nature and co-ordinated all the physical actions of human beings by the very simple laws of "number and reason".[3] In spiritual or moral training, he regarded the human being as the most sacred and responsible of all orders, unable in reason to do anything base.
