The Diary of Anne Frank is a play about a girl trying to discover her true self. Throughout the tough situations she experiences while hiding in the secret annex, Anne constantly finds herself being compared to her "perfect" sister, Margot. Despite all her attempts to live up to everyone's expectations, she discovers that she can never change who she is. Although both girls come from the same family, Anne and Margot cannot possibly be more different.
Unlike Margot, Anne is an ambitious person with an outspoken personality that usually causes her trouble. For example, she once stated, "I need to fight things out for myself! Make something of myself!" This demonstrates her will to stand up and speak her mind, which is an unappreciated quality in women at that time. Rather than backing down on her beliefs, Anne is proud of who she is. Another trait of her personality is her friendliness to others; at her Jewish Secondary school she is always in the center of crowds. In other words, she loves to socialize and people enjoy her company because of her spontaneous personality. Also, she constantly attempts to make new friends all around her. In conclusion, Anne is an individual and she follows her heart.
Margot, on the other hand, is the perfect role model; she gets along with just about everyone and never does anything wrong. According to Mr. Van Daan, Margot is " nice and quiet a domestic girl- From this statement, it can be interpreted that Margot is soft spoken, meaning that she never stands up for herself. Also, she is obedient to her elders, and because of that she never gets into trouble. Even according to Anne, "Everything [Margot] does is right- This demonstrates Margot's properness and behavior, which is exactly what was expected back during that period of time. She is helpful and silent, never making a single fault to the eyes of others. Overall, Margot is basically the exact opposite of Anne; she acts the way she is expected to but not necessarily the way she wants.
