Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Drake's OZMA project was the first project of the SETI program. (Fradin) Dr. Frank Drake also used his knowledge of Astronomy to figure an equation for the probability of life occurrence in 1961. This famous equation can be identified as the Drake Equation. It identifies the specific factors thought to influence the development of extraterrestrial civilizations. The equation goes as follows: N = R* x Fp x Ne x Fl x Fi x Fe x L. "N" is the number of communicative communities in the Milky Way whose radio signals can be detected. "R*" is the rate of formation of stars with a large enough area for living and long enough lifetime to be suitable for intelligent life to develop. "Fp" is the fraction of sun-like stars with orbiting planets. "Ne" is the number of Earth-like planets per planetary system. "Fl" is the fraction of those planets with life will be able to develop. "Fi" is the fraction of life sites where the development of intelligence is acquired. "Fe" is the fraction of planets with intelligent life that develops civilizations with technology. "L" is the lifetime of communicating civilizations. (Equation) Many eager people who are interested in the search for extraterrestrial life use Drake's equation. His contribution to finding universal life is looked upon as a great step forward for the ongoing search.
SETI has put forth many new ideas and proposals in the search. It is an institutionalized program that was proposed to NASA for the sole purpose of finding extraterrestrial life. The first search was that of Dr. Frank Drake and his OZMA project. (SETI) In 1993, congress had decided that SETI was a waste of time and stopped the funding for it, but that did not stop it from searching on. It went private with Dr. Drake and Dr. Jill Tarter leading the search. In 1997, Dr. Tarter and 32 other experts began meeting about how to "chart a path into the future." She explains, "We have to grow this.
