This sounds very selfish but supporters of egocentric ethic say that it is not, they simply treat individuals or groups such as corporations as "separate, but equal social atoms"(Merchant 63). In the seventeenth century, egocentrism became the dominating school of thought for our western way of life. This was a great ethic for private owners and corporations because it encouraged growth and the use of natural resources for profits. The only restraints put on people were that you considered your neighbors and the effects that your actions would have on them. There were common laws that were enforced on rivers, and common water because interfering with these could have a great effect on many other people around you. Things began to change a little by the late 18th century, it was decided that dams could be constructed as long as it was for the good of the people and communities surrounding it.
Thomas Hobbes a 17th century philosopher believed that people are naturally competitive, But that they could overcome this and learn to make mutual agreements. Garret Hardin a 20th century philosopher shares these basic beliefs with Hobbes. One major Difference between the two is that in Hardin's time things have changed considerably and we have many more environmental concerns to deal with. The ocean and the air are commons for the entire earth, so problems with pollution and the loss of natural resources are the problems of everybody. You can't blame it on one single person or nation. Hardin believes that the only solution is voluntary consent of all people of the world to carefully regulate their resources. The egocentric lifeboat ethic created by Hardin is based on the choices and logical reasoning of humans. One way that this could take place would be for the developed nations to help out the developing nations, as long as the developing nations agree to population control.
The ideas presented in the egocentric ethic sound pretty good to me, everyone working for themselves, but still keeping an eye on there neighbors to make sure that they are not disturbing them.
