What was it about this poem that touched my heart? What saddened me? And then, like a light bulb in my head, it clicked. The pain of war, fighting to the death in battle and raging even into the blackened darkness of night, the fighting continued is what Thomas is writing about .
The whole drive behind this piece, what makes it so strong, is the repetition. Through repeating the two main phrases we very vividly see the encouragement that Thomas is trying to make. "Do not go gentle into that good night," the title of the poem in itself is a very bold phrase. It specifically tells the soldiers on a literal note not to let up because the day is done but it also holds a hidden meaning that says simply, fight until you die and don't let the familiarity of your life hold you back from doing what you have to for what you believe in. This wasn't the only valiant statement that Thomas uses nor is it the only time repetition is used. He also repeats the word "rage" and on the same note repeats another entire phrase, "rage, rage against the dying of the light." This is saying the same as the previous, "fight death, be stronger than it." .
I see war in the entire poem but I also see a beautifully written piece of literature. I see images while I read this although it isn't in his work that these images are presented it is simply the subject matter and the familiar idea of war that gives me those images. By far the predominant image I see is someone fighting, a man in war. Possibly world war 1 or 2 but not necessarily, it is just a war and to me all are alike. When a war is won or lost medals are given out and the veterans live on to tell their experiences and horror stories to following generations who take everything the modern world has to offer. They tell their stories at Remembrance Day celebrations and all that students can think about is how glad they are that it wasn't them but even more how badly they want the guest speaker to quit talking.
