Its increasing popularity with American adolescents may be attributed to several factors including use of the drug by adult role models such as athletes, entertainers, businessmen, and professionals; the drug's image as an "upper-class drug that is relatively harmless and produces a superb high"; an abundance of cocaine supplies, making it more accessible; and the appearance of "crack" on the drug scene, which has provided teens with an inexpensive form of the drug that may be smoked. Crack use can result in severe physical dependence after only one or two uses. Once a user has become accustomed to a drug and developed a need for it, abrupt cessation of drug taking results in a withdrawal syndrome. Symptoms can include severe physical pain, tremors, sweating, psychological disturbance, convulsions, and in some cases death. It is still unknown why some people become addicted while others do not. Studies indicate that people who become addicts have underlying psychological disorders. Major disturbances during childhood. .
