According to Bruning, Hartley, Higgins, Hur, and Infante (1992), "Verbal aggressiveness, on the other hand, denotes attacking another person's self-concept instead of, or in addition to, the person's position on an issue in order to cause the individual to experience psychological pain. According to Grice (1993), " Marriage is generally considered to be a reconstructive affair. As Henslin suggests, newlyweds must adjust to extensive changes in almost every area of their lives, including their social relationships, their roles and treatment towards one another, and even their own self perceptions. Given such dramatic reform, marriage would seem to be a threatening and unattractive reform. Nonetheless, most couples anticipate these changes with positive regard. Indeed, newlyweds hope that through marriage their lives will become happier, more fulfilling, and more meaningful. It is thus no surprise that the vast majority (over 90%) of American men and women get married at least once in their lifetimes.".
The more verbally aggressive a basketball coach is with his or her players the more problems the coach will have at home. When the coach is on the court and a player makes a mistake the coach usually ends up yelling at the player. The players have no choice but to listen and take the verbal abuse. When a coach goes home and his or her spouse makes a mistake does the coach act out the way he or she does on the court? I won't go so far as to say that every coach does act this way, but something is going on if college basketball coaches have one of the highest divorce rates today (Fisher, 1996).
