Dispute Resolution In The Workplace

When the new BM came he let her know up front of the court dates. Because of the ABM's wife not appearing in court, and the fact that she took the kids out of state, he had to reappear in court the day after Christmas. He let the BM know about this court date when he found out about it. The policy for taking a vacation day requires that you request it thirty days in advance. In this situation, the ABM did not have thirty days to request that particular day off. He told the BM that he had to go back to court and she told him that he needed to work at least half a day. He then explained to the BM that he did not know how long he was going to be in court, and therefore wanted to take a vacation day. The BM told the ABM that she would not approve his vacation day. The reason she did not want to approve the ABM's vacation day was because she had planned her vacation the same time. .
The BM and the ABM had not been getting along from day one. Part of their disagreement was because the BM had not been at our branch for two weeks, and she had already started taking the rest of her vacation days off. We felt that she was not showing a good example to the rest of us because it was obvious that the BM cared only about her vacation time and not about making the transition of her being the new BM smooth. The ABM's personal problem with the BM was that she, the BM was taking all of her vacation days, and she even left early one day because her boyfriend's ex-wife broke into their house, but she would not allow him a vacation day to attend court. The ABM in turn got his vacation day approved by the BM's supervisor, the city manager, while the BM was on vacation. When the BM came back from vacation she was furious about the ABM going over her head and requesting his vacation day off. They actually got into a heated verbal argument because of it. The BM is a very confrontational person and she walked up on the ABM and put her finger in his face.
