Dispute Resolution In The Workplace

Disputes happen on a daily basis in life. When people think of disputes or conflict, they generally do not think of them taking place on the job. Workplace disputes are more common that most people think. .
While working for Hertz Local Edition, I was an onlooker to a dispute between the Branch Manger (BM) and the Assistant Branch Manager (ABM). The BM came into the office setting where the ABM and the other employees had been working together for a while, and had a good working relationship. The previous Branch Manager resigned because she wanted a career change. The work relationship with the previous BM and all other employees was also a good one. The previous BM respected all of the employees, and, in turn, we very well respected her.
The first indication that conflict would arise with the new BM was the first day she was at the office. She walked in the office and went to the back without introducing herself or speaking to anyone. The way she chose not to communicate or her lack of communication with us was frowned upon at the very beginning. Because of her actions on the first day, there was already a misunderstanding with the new BM. A few days passed, and we were trying to learn the BM's style of managing. She chose to communicate to us by dictating things and taking a "my way or the highway" approach. This form of communication was not very receptive.
The BM had a highly authoritarian way of doing things, and we were not used to that. There was also opportunity for conflict because she was a Caucasian coming into an office where every employee was African American and Hertz had already been having issues of not promoting minorities. Because of the race difference there were, of course, value differences. The employees valued freedom to do personal things when needed and honesty, whereas the BM did not care much about those values. .
The ABM was in the process of getting a divorce, and he had to go to court several times because there were children involved.
