Depression

Freshman year is the worst for students because one out of five students suffers from depression (Gold 191-192). The freshman year is worse because the student has moved from the security of his home and now has to live on his own with all the pressures of the world. Depression in children may be hard to pick out because of the way they act; some may see it as just being disobedient. Children cope with depression in other ways then adults such as misbehavior and self destructive acts (Hyde 78). A child may be seen as a delinquent but really the child is dealing with depression maybe caused their parents fighting or divorce or the struggle with their friends or school work.
There are many different types of depression. Manic Depression also known as Bipolar Disorder can be one of the most serious types of them all, also considered Bipolar disorder. Everyone that has been depressed is at risk of having a manic attack (Gold 182). A manic attack or mania is when one acts crazy or in a bizarre way. In a manic attack he/she is at risk to hurt them selves and possible others. Depressed people usually have hard times moving and getting around but in mania one cannot stop moving. Mania can be just as addicting as cocaine. Many depressed people prefer the manic stage of depression and even consider it to be their regular life (Gold 30). Many depressed people stop taking there medications, in order to experience mania. Like cocaine addicts, mania sufferers don't get help until their lives, careers, family, finances and health are in major trouble (Gold 186). Another common type of depression is major depression. This is the typical clinical depression. Five to twelve percent of men will suffer from major depression and 10-20% of women will also experience major depression (Nemeroff 49). Postpartum Depression is not well known. In its mildest form it attacks up to 70-80% of women after childbirth.
