Death Penalty



             A study shown in Philadelphia showed that African Americans were four times more likely to receive the death penalty than any other ethnic or racial group (Day, 14). More than half of the prisoner executed between 1930 and 1996 were African Americans and for rape (Day, 14). .
             The majority of the citizens favor the capital punishment because they believe that the criminals deserve death for what he/she has done. Retribution has its basis in religious values, which have historically maintained that it is proper to take an "eye for an eye- and a "life for a life- (Michigan State University). Society has used punishment to discourage criminals from unlawful action. If Murders are sentenced to death and executed, potential murders will think twice before killing for fear of losing their own life (Michigan State University). "Rather than being cruel and unusual, capital punishment actually treats murders with more kindness and dignity than their victims received- said by Michael Scaljon. The death penalty is a mandatory death sentence for a certain type of crime. Someone who has killed someone has lost the right to live. Why does the government kill people to prove that killing people is wrong?.
             Supporters of capital punishment countered that the ultimate penalty of death was necessary for the punishment of terrible crimes because it provides the most retribution and condemnation (Zirming, Encarta).
             The death penalty has being around since the ancient times, when they used methods of executions such as crucifixion, stoning, drowning, burning at the stake, impaling, and beheading. Capital Punishment, which has being in the United States for nearly three hundred years is a legal infliction of death as a penalty for any individual violating criminal law. Capital punishment is punishment by death for committing a crime and the death penalty has also being imposed for such serious crimes as armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, and treason (Zimring).
