You can see the dominance of juvenile executions in Texas and Virginia. The periods on death row awaiting execution for these executed juvenile offenders ranged from5 years to over 20 years, resulting in the age at execution ranging from 23 to38 (Victor L.Strieb, pg 3-4). All but one of these executed juvenile offenders were age 17 at the time of their crimes, with only Sean Sellers being 16. Not reported on the above chart I found and even younger boy George Stinney who was executed in South Carolina possibly before 1973. He was the youngest person executed in the U.S. since WWII . At fourteen years old, Stinney was the youngest Afro- American, juvenile and male executed in the United States. He was so small his mask fell off while he was being electrocuted by the state of South Carolina (The National coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty).
Two out of three children sent to death row are people of color. Historically, two out of three people executed for crimes they committed as children have been African-American. During this century, the ratio has jumped to three out of four. Of the nine girls executed in U.S. history, eight were Black and one was American Indian. The Federal Government has imposed the death penalty against American Indian children for crimes they committed as young as ten years old (The National coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty).
